Behind the Build: A Collaboration with Durham Construction + Sill Design
Today we sit down with Durham Construction co-owners Daniel Durham and Jeff Rowe to discuss a recent collaboration with Sill Design and a small team of trade partners that has earned accolades in the May 2024 issue of Dwell Magazine.
Daniel, anyone who knows you and the core values of Durham Construction knows that you have a steadfast commitment to sustainability. How did that factor into this project?
Daniel: Absolutely, sustainability is a core value for us at Durham Construction. We always strive to use green products whenever possible, and this project was no exception. Our partnership with Sill Design allowed us to integrate eco-friendly materials seamlessly into the design. For instance, we used natural rubber cork flooring tiles, which contribute significantly to the overall vibe.
Jeff, you've reflected that the clients on this project were fantastic to work with. Can you tell us more about that?
Jeff: The clients were amazing. They were not only down to earth but also incredibly patient and supportive throughout the entire process. We really connected with them, and their positivity made the project enjoyable for everyone involved. We practice the Integrated Design Process as a part of every project, and they were deeply involved in all phases of the renovation.
Daniel, what were some standout details from this collaboration?
Daniel: One detail that stands out to me is the rectilinear "re-lite" window in the dining room. It's a small but mighty feature that not only adds visual appeal but also floods the space with natural light. Additionally, the integration of the pocket door into the cabinetry was a challenging yet rewarding detail that adds a touch of elegance to the design. Moreover, the electrical, tile, and cabinet installations required a high level of coordination. We had to ensure that the cabinets and tiles interacted seamlessly, with full runs of tile and no odd cuts, and that outlets and electrical components were perfectly positioned. This level of precision extended to the breakfast nook area, where framing, window, and door alignment were meticulously planned.
Jeff, were there any particular challenges you faced during the project?
Jeff: While every project comes with its own set of challenges, I'm proud to say that our team was able to overcome them all. One notable aspect was the intricate coordination required to tie together various details from different trades. An example is ensuring the T&G wood ceiling was strategically installed so the lighting aligned perfectly with the boards, and cabinet components terminated at exact locations. However, with the support of our trade partners and the resilience of our team, we were able to navigate through any obstacles seamlessly. A key element that stood out to me was that everything was dialed in by the time our work began, thanks to the thorough designs from Sill Design.
Rick Olson, owner of Olson Brothers Woodworks and a part of this project, shared his experience. "One thing I enjoy about working with Durham Construction is the attention to the finer details that seem small, but combine to accomplish a next-level finish. The details can be challenging, but never are they without merit. What I also love about DC projects, in general, is that their company surrounds itself with tradesfolk who truly care about the end result. Everyone works in a manner consistent with helping one another accomplish their best work."
Natalie Coyne, Marketing Director at Sardonyx Flooring & Design, added, “As finish material installers, we work with a variety of design and build companies and our partnership with Durham Construction is among our favorites. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this job, combining classic style with a modern and environmental flair. Just like any job with Durham, the design was flawless, the organization was impeccable, and the execution top notch.”
Rick Canfield, from Alpha Stoneworks, also praised the collaboration. "We love working on projects with some soul - old world craftsmanship; bringing classic details back."
Daniel and Jeff, both of you rave about the successful partnership with Sill Design. What made this collaboration so special?
Daniel: Working with Sill Design was a pleasure from start to finish. Greer and Taura from the design team were always available, organized, and open to our ideas. Their exceptional drawings and elevations provided a solid foundation for the project, and their collaboration truly elevated the final result.
Jeff: I couldn't agree more. Sill Design's professionalism and creativity were instrumental in bringing our vision to life. Their attention to detail and willingness to work closely with our team ensured that every aspect of the project was executed flawlessly. I also appreciated how up-front they were with any schedule changes, which kept everything running smoothly.
Sill Design said, "This project is a testament to great design, collaboration, and craftsmanship. A huge thanks to the many talented hands that went into making this project a smashing success."
